About Unit 1
💭 Essential Question: How does thinking geographically help us understand our world?
Unit 1: Thinking Like a Geographer introduces students to the discipline of geography by exploring how people, places, and environments are connected. Throughout the unit, students investigate how maps, borders, geographic relationships, and scales of analysis shape the way we understand the world around us. Using case studies, maps, videos, primary sources, and geographic data, students will analyze how geography influences movement, culture, trade, identity, and daily life. Students will also evaluate the strengths and limitations of geographic tools and consider how different perspectives can shape the stories maps and regions tell. The unit culminates in a place-based assessment titled Thinking Geographically About Me, where students apply geographic thinking skills to analyze their own community through observation, mapping, and written reflection.
