About Unit 9

💭 Essential Question: How has globalization affected people and places around the world?

Unit 9: Globalization explores how growing connections between people and places have changed the world. Students begin by investigating what globalization is and how advances in transportation, communication, and technology have increased global connections over time. They examine how goods, people, and ideas move around the world and use maps to analyze how global supply chains connect materials, workers, businesses, and consumers across different places. Students then evaluate globalization by examining the opportunities it can create, why its benefits are not shared equally, and the economic, social, cultural, and environmental trade-offs that come with a more connected world. Finally, students compare proposals for responding to the challenges of globalization and consider which actions should be prioritized. The unit culminates in a Globalization Curated Research Paper, where students use evidence to explain how globalization has affected people and places around the world. Throughout the unit, students develop the disciplinary skill of causation, examining the causes of globalization and the multiple effects that increased global connections can have on people and places.
